SSD vs. SSI: Understand the Right Program for Your Claim

In order to evaluate which Disability Program is the correct program for your specific situation, it is important to understand the differences between the two:

Social Security Disability (SSD):

SSD is a benefit program for those that have paid enough social security taxes, but who are now unable to work due to their disabilities. The benefits for these individuals are based upon the amount of Social Security taxes that have been paid over their working lives. The Social Security Administration uses a mathematical formula to deduce the benefit amount that an individual will receive, based on average lifetime earnings and the total number of years worked.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI):

SSI is a benefit program that is available for individuals whose income and assets fall within certain prescribed limits, but are unable to work at any job due to their disabilities. People under 18 years of age may also qualify for SSI benefits, which are financed through tax revenues. Benefit amounts are determined based upon living arrangements, income received by the household and assets that are owned by the disabled individual.
